Design 2024
The architectural form of the nongak performance hall is defined by the seamless integration of the stage and audience areas with the village, reflecting the fluid boundaries typical of nongak performances. In nongak, performers and spectators, as well as the stage and audience area, blend together, with performances occurring in streets, yards, and in front of sacred trees, adapting to the terrain and context.
Architecturally, the hall deviates from the traditional linear layout, embracing an omnidirectional approach where sounds emanate from various points towards the stage. This design allows for continuous audience movement from all directions.
Nongak stages, part of ritualistic exorcism, involve processions and performances throughout the village, creating temporary, adaptive spaces rather than fixed ones. Starting from the village’s sacred tree, the performance flows through various locations, culminating in a grand festivity at the largest open space, with our outdoor performance hall as the final destination.
Seongdangnongak, originally a grain transport festival, no longer serves as a village-wide celebration. To continue this intangible heritage, we propose the methodology of nongak, which follows continuous paths and temporarily occupies spaces, addressing sustainability and community engagement.
This project respects and preserves cultural heritage while integrating sustainable solutions, ensuring the nongak performance hall remains a living, adaptable space for the village and its residents.
