The Hidden 8.3% - UIA2024 ‘Diversecity’
We are honored to participate in UIA2024 Kuala Lumpur as part of the Korea exhibition team, alongside Sanbosa @slowly_walking_people , Uu Architects @uu.architects and Design group Oz @dgoz_architecture . This event not only provided a meaningful platform to present our urban regeneration projects in Buan-gun, focused on partially urbanized small towns in Korea (Gun, 郡), but also allowed us to discover the hidden gems of Malaysian architecture. Engaging with architects from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds enriched our understanding and opened new perspectives.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Korean Institute of Architects and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for their support and invitation to this event. We also thank Buan-gun for giving us the opportunity to work on urban regeneration projects. This exhibition marks the beginning of our journey to connect with and contribute to the global architectural dialogue.
The video we created for the exhibition is available through the link below and on our project page. https://youtu.be/b0QmnV2QH1M
We are thrilled to announce that our proposal has been selected as the winning entry for the Iksan Seongdangpogu Nongak Training Center design competition. Our project seamlessly integrates the stage and audience with the village, reflecting the fluid boundaries of nongak performances. In Nongak, led by the village residents, there is minimal distinction between performers and spectators, and there is no fixed performance space. Performances take place on village streets, in yards, open spaces, and in front of sacred trees, with sound guiding the audience towards the stage from all directions. During long performance hours, the continuous entry and exit of the audience occur naturally.
Seongdangnongak involves the villagers leading processions and performances throughout the village, culminating in a grand festivity at the largest open space. We have designed the outdoor performance hall as the final destination of this continuous flow. Inspired by the continuous paths and temporary occupation of spaces in Seongdangpogu Nongak, we propose a solution that preserves the intangible heritage while addressing sustainability and community engagement for the village
We are honored to announce that our first public architecture project, Buan Art Factory, has been awarded the 2024 iF Design Award, one of the three most prestigious design awards. We believe it is a notable achievement to be recognized by the global architecture scene with a small, low-cost, and local project, following last year’s nomination as a laureate of the 2023 Red Dot Design Award. Two more adaptive reuse projects we have just completed will be revealed soon.
We recently had an interview with Korea Herald Business, the oldest economic newspaper in Korea. We were grateful for the opportunity to share our design narratives about our recent projects, and to emphasize the role and responsibility of public architecture in our daily cultural experience. Although we couldn’t bring ourselves to watch the interview video, as it feels too embarrassing to watch ourselves talking, if you are interested in our thoughts, please check the link below.

We are excited to announce that our proposal has been selected as the winning entry for the design competition of the Gangneung Unification Park Sky Forest Observatory. Gangneung's Aninjin and Jeondongjin are places hiding the sorrow of war. With the pain of events such as the Korean War, the North Korean submarine infiltration on September 18, and armed infiltrations, this place has been chosen to express the longing for peace and reunification, leading to the creation of Gangneung Unification Park. Positioned where mountains and the sea harmonize, the observatory reflects the unique sense of place in Gangneung, where one can experience the beautiful natural landscape of South Korea and the sadness of division together. It will become a new landmark for Gangneung Unification Park.
