Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre, 2023

Competition, 4th Prize

Design 2023

The purpose of the architectural design competition for the TarTu Downtown Cultural Center was to find a perfect architectural solution that embodies a unique charm and atmosphere, harmonizing with the picturesque Emajgi River and illuminating the urban space beautifully. The architects were required to design spaces that can accommodate a public library, art gallery, multi-functional event center, and various cultural facilities. Additionally, they needed to incorporate a biodiverse and vibrant park landscape, as well as create human-centered public spaces that promote comfortable communication and enjoyment. Maintaining high functionality without sacrificing beauty was of utmost importance. The cultural center was expected to proudly stand as a landmark of the city, while also preserving the city's historical structure that has evolved from the past to the present.
By reconstructing the volumes and facades reminiscent of pre-war streets, the design aimed to restore the city's identity. The significance of places formed over centuries signifies the sustainability of memories and stories for the citizens. Our proposal seeks to revive and preserve the urban landscape of the past, revitalizing the bustling market that existed centuries ago. Through this, the TarTu Cultural Center can become a cultural hub that harmoniously blends the past and present, ensuring the sustainability of the city's memories.
