Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre, 2023
Competition, 4th Prize
Design 2023
The purpose of the architectural design competition for the Tartu Downtown Cultural Center was to find an ideal architectural solution that would harmonize with the unique charm and atmosphere of the Emajõgi River while enhancing the beauty of the city’s urban landscape. Architects were tasked with designing human-centered public spaces that could house a public library, art gallery, multifunctional event center, and various cultural facilities, alongside vibrant park landscapes rich in biodiversity, where people could comfortably communicate and enjoy themselves. It was essential to ensure high functionality without sacrificing beauty, and the cultural center was expected to proudly serve as a city landmark.
The project aimed to preserve the city's structure shaped over time, reconstructing the volume and facades of pre-war streets to restore the city’s identity. The meaning embedded in these spaces over time represents the sustainability of memory and stories for the citizens.
Our proposal seeks to revive and preserve the landscape of the city as it once existed. By reinterpreting the bustling market scenes of centuries past, the Tartu Cultural Center could become a cultural hub that harmoniously blends the past and present, sustainably preserving the city’s memories.
