Narrative Architects was founded by Namin Hwang and Sihong Kim. We aim to provide positive solutions for architecture and society through architectural concepts and design ideas. We incorporate the cultural background and the personal or collective experiences associated with each building into the design process. Our work begins with a deep understanding of the surrounding context and expresses the unique meaning of each project through various means such as form, space, material, and image. By embracing expanded ways of thinking beyond the formal boundaries of architecture, we aim to interpret and propose environmental, cultural, and social contexts in original ways, ultimately fostering a constructive interaction between architecture and society. In 2023, we received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award at the Korea Spatial Culture Awards, and have also been honored with several international design prizes including the iF Design Award, the Red Dot Award, and the International Architecture Awards from The Chicago Athenaeum.

내러티브 아키텍츠 건축사사무소는 김시홍과 황남인에 의해 공동으로 설립되었다. 우리는 건축적 개념과 디자인 아이디어를 통해 건축과 사회에 대한 긍정적 해법을 제시한다. 우리는 건축물이 속한 문화적 배경과 개인적·집단적 경험의 의미를 설계 과정에 반영한다. 우리의 작업은 주변의 컨텍스트를 이해하는 과정에서 시작되며, 형태, 공간, 재료, 이미지 등 다양한 방식으로 프로젝트마다의 고유한 의미를 표현한다. 건축 외연의 사고를 수렴하며, 환경, 문화, 사회적 컨텍스트를 독창적으로 해석하고 제안함으로써 건축과 사회의 건전한 상호작용을 이끌어내는 것을 목표로 한다. 2023년에는 대한민국 공간문화대상에서 문화체육관광부 장관상을 수상하였으며, iF 디자인 어워드, 레드닷 어워드, 시카고 아테네움 국제건축상 등 다수의 국제 디자인 상을 수상하였다.

Namin Hwang Principal, KIRA
황남인 소장, 건축사

Namin Hwang graduated from the Department of Architecture at Seoul National University and founded Narrative Architects after gaining professional experience at several small design-oriented architecture offices. Her work aims to expand the epistemic framework of architectural thought through the transdisciplinary integration of knowledge, focusing on spatially articulating the complex narratives of human history and urban life. She understands architecture not as a fixed form but as a processual and adaptive construct, continuously shaped by social and environmental transformations. She currently serves as a Public Architect for the City of Wonju, a Design Planning Architect at Seoul National University, a Women’s Architect at Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH), and a GH Young Architect at Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation. She teaches an architectural design studio at Seoul National University and has previously led a design studio at Kangwon National University.

황남인은 서울대학교 건축학과를 졸업한 후 아틀리에에서의 실무 경험을 거쳐 김시홍과 함께 내러티브 아키텍츠를 설립하였다. 다양한 분야의 지식을 초학제적으로 통합함으로써 건축적 사유의 인식론적 틀을 확장하고자 하며, 인간의 역사와 도시의 복합적인 내러티브를 공간적으로 표상하는 데 주력한다. 건축을 고정된 형태가 아닌 사회적·환경적 변화 속에서 지속적으로 형성되는 과정적이며 적응적인 구성체로 이해하며, 도시 공간의 재구성과 건축의 변형 가능성을 탐구한다. 현재 서울시와 원주시의 공공건축가, 서울대학교 기획설계 건축가, 서울주택도시공사와 경기주택도시공사의 자문 건축가로 활동하고 있으며, 서울대학교와 강원대학교에서 건축설계스튜디오를 강의한 바 있다.

Sihong Kim Principal, KIRA
김시홍 소장, 건축사

Sihong Kim graduated from the Department of Architecture at Dongguk University and received his master’s degree from the same institution. He gained professional experience at several emerging architecture ateliers before co-founding Narrative Architects with Nam-In Hwang, initiating an independent architectural practice. He understands architecture as a discursive and projective medium—one that mediates social demands while embracing urban contingency and cultural transformation—and seeks to propose architecture grounded in contemporaneity. He currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Architecture at Kookmin University and Korea National University of Arts, where he leads a design studio, and has also taught architectural design studios at Sejong University. His recent research focuses on the mediated interaction between image and text, exploring how artificial intelligence can intervene in and expand architectural processes.

김시홍은 동국대학교 건축학과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 석사학위를 취득하였다. 이후 여러 젊은 건축 아틀리에에서 실무 경험을 쌓았으며, 황남인과 함께 내러티브 아키텍츠를 공동 설립하여 독립적인 건축 작업을 시작하였다. 건축을 사회적 요구를 조율하는 장치이자, 도시의 우연성과 문화적 변화를 수용하는 담론적이고 투사적인 매체로 이해하며, 현재성에 기반한 건축을 제안하고자 한다. 국민대학교와 한국예술종합학교 건축학과에서 겸임교수로 재직하며 건축설계스튜디오를 운영하고 있으며, 세종대학교에서도 강의한 바 있다. 최근에는 이미지와 텍스트의 매개적 상호작용을 중심으로, 인공지능이 건축적 프로세스에 어떻게 개입하고 확장할 수 있는지에 대한 탐구를 이어가고 있다.
